CA Foundation is the entry-level examination for the Chartered Accountancy programme conducted by ICAI. It is the first step toward becoming a qualified Chartered Accountant. Covering fundamentals of Accounting, Business Laws, Mathematics, and Economics, it prepares students for the rigorous CA journey ahead. Open to students from Commerce, Arts, and Science streams after Class 12.
CA Foundation is conducted twice a year — May/June and November/December. Students must register with ICAI at least 4 months before the exam and appear after completing the study period.
CA Foundation consists of 4 papers. Papers 1 & 2 are descriptive (3 hrs each); Papers 3 & 4 are objective type (2 hrs each). All papers carry 100 marks each.
Principles and Practice of Accounting — Theoretical Framework, Accounting Process, Bank Reconciliation, Inventories, Depreciation, Bills of Exchange, Partnership
Business Laws — Indian Contract Act, Sale of Goods Act, LLP Act, Companies Act basics, Negotiable Instruments Act
Quantitative Aptitude — Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, Statistics — MCQ based, 2 hours
Business Economics — Micro and Macro Economics, Theory of Demand, Money & Banking, Government Budget — MCQ based

From any stream — Commerce, Science, or Arts. CBSE, GSEB, or any recognised board.
Must register with ICAI (Foundation Route) and complete the 4-month mandatory study period.
Graduates with 55%+ (Commerce) or 60%+ (other streams) can skip Foundation and go directly to Intermediate.
Students appearing in Class 12 can also register provisionally with ICAI before results.
CA Foundation is held twice a year. The exam is conducted by ICAI at various centres across India.
